E.C.A. Conference 2011

8th E.C.A. Conference 2011, Porto

Dear Colleagues,

It is a pleasure to announce that the 8th Conference held in Porto from 2 to 5 July was a great success. More than 750 scientists attended the meeting. The programme which focused on new topics and technological advances came just at the right moment when cytogenetic approaches are diversifying. From the feedback both during and after the conference I got the strong impression that everyone really appreciated the scientific programme. People also liked the venue and the splendid city of Porto. The outstanding programme included 34 invited talks, 19 selected talks from submitted abstracts, 346 poster presentations, and 10 Permanent Working Group (PWG) meetings. The PWGs were very well attended with a lot of interaction between participants. Seven leading companies held Satellite Meetings, which were also very well attended and which provided an opportunity for detailed discussions on specific developing technologies.

We look forward to welcome you at the next E.C.A. conference.

The city is located 300 km north of Lisbon and has a magnificent coastline. The river Douro flows into the sea at Porto and is a major waterway linking the city to all points eastward. Porto is also known as the " City of Bridges”. As one of Europe's oldest cities Porto is built against the hillsides overlooking the mouth of the Douro and offers stunning views.

With its breathtaking monuments and masterpieces of contemporary architecture, its glamorous settings and charming amenities, it has a surprisingly traditional yet highly cosmopolitan lifestyle. Porto has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site for its old town centre by the river. It was also the European Capital of Culture in 2001. The Alfândega Congress and Exhibition Centre, an imposing former Customs House, stands in the city of Porto as a fine example of neoclassic architecture with some very special features and unique spaces. Located in Ribeira, the historical centre of Oporto, by the side of the river Douro, the venue is only a 25 minute drive from the Oporto - Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport and only a 10-15 minute walk from many hotel alternatives with different price ranges. The old town, the city centre and Vila Nova De Gaia are easily accesible from the venue.
